And now, introducing Sarah M.†¦ Accepted: Wed like to get to know you! Where are you from? Where and what did you study as an undergrad? Do you have any other degrees? Sarah: I grew up in East Montpelier, Vermont. I went to SUNY-Albany for undergrad where I studied Public Policy and went to UNC-Chapel Hill for my Masters of Public Administration. My thesis was on special medical needs after disaster, inspired by my work after Hurricane Katrina. Accepted: Can you share three fun facts about yourself? Sarah: The only science class I took as an undergraduate was the required semester of biology. I started medical school the week before I turned 30. My husband and I were the first married couple to matriculate at the UVM College of Medicine. Accepted: What year are you at UVM College of Medicine?   Sarah: I’m currently wrapping up my third year, expecting to graduate in May of 2017. Accepted: Why did you choose this program? How are you a good fit?   Sarah: I grew up in Vermont, worked as a research coordinator at UVM before school and in fact, was born at the hospital where I now do my clinicals, so I was familiar with the medical school and reputation of the hospital. Will and I wanted to stay together if at all possible and UVM offered the most affordable way to get us both through medical school. Once we started school, it was clear that picking a familiar program in a familiar place had its benefits. We didn’t have to spend energy figuring out a new town and we knew many faculty members from living, working and running in Burlington, which made it feel like home. Accepted: What is your favorite thing about that program? Is there anything you’d change? Sarah: Our first two years are condensed (we take our Boards in March) so that we hit the wards earlier and get more clinical time. We also have clinical exposure during our first two years through the Doctoring in Vermont class. Although basic science was interesting, I’ve always been more interested in clinical medicine and patient interaction, so those early opportunities to work with patients were critical to avoiding burnout for me. We also have a number of places where you can do your clerkships and the opportunity to check out other hospital systems has been a great one. My first rotation, for example, took me to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, ME. I was all by myself with no idea of what I was doing and the doctors there were just incredible in terms of teaching me how to provide care, how to think and how to transition to being a doctor. Accepted: Based on your blog, you taking running and fitness really seriously! Has that passion influenced your decision to pursue medicine? And how do you fit all those miles in when youve got all that studying to do Sarah: We get one body and running is how I choose to maintain mine. I’ve been a runner as long as I can remember and for me, running is a bit like brushing my teeth. It just happens every day. Like anything, if you’re going to fit something in around work or school, it has to be your priority. Studying fits around my running and coaching, not vice versa, and although this might not work for other people, this forces me to be extremely present in whatever I’m doing. When I study, I’m just studying. Sometimes I study when I’m running, either by talking though a case with a friend or by listening to a class podcast, but generally I keep the two separate. Coaching is how I stay human but also how I continue to give back to my community. I don’t have time to be part of student interest groups or student government as a result, but hope to go to a residency that values my long term relationship with my team. Accepted: Whats your favorite class so far? Rotation? Sarah: In terms of classes, I loved CRR (Cardiology, Respiratory and Renal) because I love physiology. To me, the body is a big machine with complicated mechanics that you have to take apart piece by piece to find the problem. This class was one of the first where I really learned how to think clinically and where I found myself totally enthralled with the perturbations of the human body. In terms of rotations, I’ve liked them all but miss Obstetrics and Gynecology the most. It is an incredible diverse clerkship that includes surgery, primary care and of course, delivering babies. The hours were long, and the stress could be high, but I still looked forward to getting there every day. Accepted: Looking back at the application process, what would you say was your greatest challenge? How would you advise other applicants who may be experiencing similar challenges? Sarah: The hardest part of the application process is keeping the faith. When I was applying, my advisor told me I would never get in and that I shouldn’t even apply. I did anyway and was one of the first people accepted to UVM. Despite that happy ending, the application year is absolutely gruesome. You deal with more rejection and uncertainty than almost any other time in your life and if you spend any time on the internet forums, you come away convinced that you are just not good enough. My advice is threefold: 1. Make sure this is what you really want. Medical school is not so much about the difficulty of the material but the unending grind of classes and commitments. Even the most passionate find themselves exhausted at times, so make sure you come to this with passion and enough interest in enough things to get through it. 2. Don’t fabricate or embellish your application. Be who you are and represent that person proudly. Everyone comes to medical school with different backgrounds and the one thing I can tell you about the people in my class is that most of us had one or two things that we were really dedicated to rather than fifteen shallow extracurriculars. The trick is to demonstrate how your life experiences prepare you for medicine. 3. Use the application year to build good habits. This takes a lot of insight but medical school will take what you give it, so you need to have both a strong sense of what your boundaries are and have healthy habits already in place. For my husband and me, we weren’t willing to stay up all night, give up running or give up on our garden so we set limits and goals that allowed us to succeed in medical school without losing sight of the things that keep us human outside the walls of the College of Medicine. The House of Representatives approved it, voting along sectional lines. However, the Senate rejected it and voted there would be no restrictions on slavery in the State of Missouri. Meanwhile, Maine, which was set up to be a free state, was being blocked from joining the Union by Southern senators. The matter was eventually worked out in the next Congress, which convened in late 1819. The Missouri Compromise dictated that Maine would enter the Union as a free state, and Missouri would enter as a slave state. Henry Clay of Kentucky was Speaker of the House during the Missouri Compromise debates and was deeply engaged in moving the legislation forward. Years later, he would be known as The Great Compromiser, in part because of his work on the landmark deal. The Impact of the Missouri Compromise Perhaps the most important aspect of the Missouri Compromise was the agreement that no territory north of Missouri’s southern border (the 36 ° 30 parallel) would be allowed to enter the Union as a slave state. That part of the agreement effectively stopped slavery from spreading to the remainder of the area included in the Louisiana Purchase. The Missouri Compromise, as the first great federal agreement over the slavery issue, was also important in setting the precedent that Congress could regulate slavery in new territories and states. The question as to whether the federal government had the authority to regulate slavery would be hotly debated decades later, especially during the 1850s. The Kansas-Nebraska Act The Missouri Compromise was ultimately repealed in 1854 by the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which effectively eliminated the provision that slavery would not extend north of the 30th parallel. The legislation created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska and allowed the population of each territory to determine whether or not slavery would be permitted. This led to a series of confrontations that became known as Bleeding Kansas, or the Border War. Among the anti-slavery fighters was abolitionist John Brown, who would later become famous for his raid on Harpers Ferry. The Dred Scott Decision and the Missouri Compromise Controversy over the slavery issue continued into the 1850s. In 1857, the Supreme Court ruled on a landmark case, Dred Scott v. Sandford, in which enslaved African American Dred Scott sued for his freedom on the grounds that he had lived in Illinois, where slavery was illegal. The court ruled against Scott, declaring that any African American, enslaved or free, whose ancestors had been sold as slaves could not be an American citizen. Since the court ruled that Scott was not a citizen, he had no legal grounds to sue. As part of its decision, the Supreme Court also declared that the federal government had no authority to regulate slavery in the federal territories, and ultimately, led to the finding that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional.

Although domestic violence has been around for many years, society now sees it as a threat to our homes. This type of crime is unique because it’s a nondiscriminatory crime; it can happen to anyone at any time. Domestic violence is also a dark figure crime, which means that it is a crime least reported to the police. In this paper, I discuss how race, class and gender influence domestic violence. In some cases, the perpetrator can abuse victim(s) by pushing, punching, and threatening them with sexual assault and more. Although there are restraining orders to prevent the perpetrator from getting near the victim, domestic violence has been known for being a dark figu re of crime. With that being said, Richard Davis stated in his book, â€Å"Americans have historically objected to the government’s attempt to legislate what they consider their private morality or family problems† (83). Several Americans do oppose laws that violate their home privacy, but it is the government’s job to keep its citizens safe from any danger, even if that danger is in a household. According to mic.com, â€Å"the average percentage of domestic violence that is not reported is 70%, which means that only 30% get reported†. There are many reasons why victims don’t report the abuse. Some victims may feel that by reporting the crime, the situation would only get worst. Others may be scared that the perpetrator would involve them in the situation and murder or hurt them. Regardless of the excuse, Americans have been increasing the number of cases by not reporting it to the authorities. If more cases were reported, then the topic would be o f more importance to Washington D.C., where legislator could put a stop to it. People have experienced different forms of racism and depending on what part of the world you lived in, many wars have been fought different ethnic and racial group. The term racism has been over used so much so that it does no longer have a significant definition. The meaning varies depending on who is being asked what racism is. According to the book, Institutional Racism in America, however, racism is a broad term. â€Å"Discrimination, segregation, harassment intimidation and other acts are what is deemed illegal in America, the authors note. The excuse used by the white employers was that they saw it fair to give favored assistance to them to annul affirmative action policies. Affirmative action has allowed blacks and minorities who will normally not be hired by certain employers has allowed them to put their foot in the door. Affirmative action in my humble opinion also does not allow the most qualified person to get the job, but it allows a company to hire any minority for the job who may not even be qualified, thus allowing the ripple effect to continue on the most educated black men and women. Some companies will even hire a blac k woman in favor of a black man because they want to use the black woman as a token for affirmative action both for race and gender. In fact, not only is this book based on racism concerning how white networks exclude black men from blue-collar jobs alone, but it is also an intriguing gender politics. By doing this, he leads the consumer into believing that he needs the product to have a better lifestyle. My assumption has been that people are fully aware of what they need. In the actual sense, advertisers use the element of visuals to suggest to us our need for the product; we are led to acquiring things we do not really need just because we do not have them. In his book titled Mythologies, Roland Barthes seeks to explain human behavior and in particular, the correlation between childhood and adulthood. He stipulates that the toys given to children prepare them for adult life; dolls prepare girls for motherhood, while videogames enable boys to take on challenges in life. At first glance, the society would be against the view of creating more dolls and video games. As a member of society, I am of the opinion to limit our young ones’ exposure to toys and give them educational material instead, books for example. However, looking deeper into this, stopping the production of toys would translate into children growing up without knowledge of their expected roles. The result would be a generation of people with theoretical knowledge unable to fulfill practical roles. Both Berger and Barthes employ Oulipo as a style in writing their work. It uses unique techniques aimed at inspiring deep thought among its readers. The technique used is known as constrained writing whereby the writer is limited to the use of certain patterns to create an aesthetic effect. The writers have used ordinary items in their stories and leave the reader with the task of deciphering the deeper meaning intended. In the film They Live, the caution given to the society is that things are not always, what they appear to be. When he puts on the special sunglasses, Nada experiences a completely new world; what were previously assumed ordinary men were seen for the aliens they really were. He also discovers other writings in a billboard that previously seemed to advertise only ordinary products. The movie is a reflection of the different viewpoints we may have of the same things. The movie could be a representation of two sides to the same coin. Applying this in real life means that sometimes it is necessary to change our point of view to see things in a different light. In the movie, it is not that the aliens were not visible to the naked human eye. They could be seen, but only as humans. The special sunglasses acquired by Nada are a symbol of a change in perspective that uncovered the guise of the aliens. We are surrounded by common features around us, but until we change our perspective, we will never realize the true beauty or even ugliness of those things. Society is of the view that it is possible to have lasting relationships. In her book, Lispector holds an opposite view. Through the failed relationships she includes in her book, she proposes that relationships are bound to break upon the discovery of some truths. She examines the imperfection of humans as the leading cause of failure and sadness in relationships. Society often chooses to blind itself to others’ faults, and in this, live a phony life. According to her, the only ways to maintain relationships is by recognizing the faults in each other and learn to live with them. Flarf is a type of style use to write poetry, achieved by putting together phrases from different websites. It does not take into account any of the styles applied to poetry, for instance alliteration, rhyming, repetition and others. The meanings of the poems may sometimes be disturbing or funny, depending on the content. However random the poems may appear to be, the writer always has an intention in writing them. It is more of an experimental type of writing than it is formal. In the beginning, it was considered as a poor form of poetry. However, with time, it is gaining recognition as a creative work of art. From Berger’s description of the oil paintings, one of the ways of seeing is through visuals. I have seen people judging the things around them at first sight, proving the power of the visual eye. For example, when I see a man in tattered clothes; my immediate assumption is that he is poor, even though that may not necessarily be the case. The next view held by Barthes is the subconscious mind. He proposes the relationship between now and the future. His idea is that whatever we do now has some correlation to the future. My example in this is when someone is kind to someone; he subconsciously expects the same treatment in return sometime in the future. Lastly, Lispector urges us to open our eyes to the faults of others and ours too. Blinding ourselves to reality will lead to bruising, as she puts it in her book. In today’s society, a good example is alcoholism. Alcoholics more often than not deny that they have a problem, presenting a hindrance to the solution. The biggest step in treating alcoholism is by seeing the problem for what it really is. Denial is not only on the part of the alcoholics but also on their immediate family. Once accepted the problem is treated and in the process, salvaging the relationships that would otherwise be damaged. In summary, the three ways of seeing thins are through the visual eye, the subconscious mind and by acceptance of reality. These views seem independent but ultimately, one view leads to another. Naturally, we first judge things by what we see with our eyes, like the paintings as demonstrated by Berger. What we have seen is then assimilated by the subconscious mind. Our habits, even the most insignificant ones, are driven by what we store in our minds. The final stage is acknowledgement of things, not just for what they appear to be but also for what they really are. Many times, we stop at the second stage if the situation is too grave for us to deal with. However, denying reality will not change a thing. Soulstorm is a book by Clarice Lispector, a Brazilian writer, which was initially written in Portuguese, but later translated into English in 1989. The stories in the book ascertain a world in which women and men are indulged in certain unexpected processes and events that are perfectly natural, but seem to be totally illogical to those who experience them. Though there is nothing special about the characters in the stories, their souls exhibit the turmoil culminating from the awareness of the immutable life truths of solitude, passion, mortality, fear and passion, which cause the constant turbulence in the lives of different human beings (Lispector 150). What the author means by the fact that all the stories in the book are bruising is the fact that all the characters in the stories encounter some sort of turmoil in their souls due to life’s truths that cannot be ignored. Most of the characters in the Soulstorm’s stories are women in their late seventies and eighties. This means that they have gone through life and are aware of the main aspects that make the human life in the world. The individual characters are obsessed with life rather than death but the life they live in is full of bruising experiences that leave them trying to understand the meaning of life. Dona Candida Raposo is the eight-year-old protagonist in the story â€Å"Footsteps†. She is so full of the desire for pleasure such that she decides to go to visit the gynecologist with the aim of identifying the solutions to her pleasure. The gynecologist suggested she finds a young man to meet her desire and when she does that, she experiences â€Å"silent fireworks† (Lispector 48). In the same manner, Maria Angelica de Andrade, the sixty-year-old protagonist of â€Å"But It’s Going to Rain,† decides to take a lover of nineteen years to cater for her desire for pleasure (Lispector 66). In the two cases, Lispector explores the growing pleasures of aging women who should be happy with the fact that even in the eighty and sixty years, they can find happiness in younger lovers. These stories however are not happy but have a bruising effect because the two protagonists view themselves as women mocked by life because to them love and desire at their advanced age is both shameful and ridiculous. Bruising can be reflected through characters that are running from one problem or the other. Sona Maria Rita, the seventy year old protagonist in â€Å"The Departure of the Train,† Sits on the train opposite to thirty year old Angela Pralina. While Sona Maria Rita is running away from her ambitious and cold daughter, Angela is running away from a hyper-rational and intellectual lover. The two form an unspoken relationship on their quest for a sense of self as well as dignity. Their lives might look fulfilled but they are bruising owing to the fact that they cannot find happiness with the people they love. Beautiful Carla the protagonist in â€Å"Plaza Maua,† loses her sense of self through the words of a trusted friend with whom she had built a strong friendship that turned sour. And I do!† (Lispector 56) From a reflection on all the stories Soulstorm, Lispector views life and relationships as things that can never bring happiness to different people owing to the fact that the truths of life will never enable a person to have a happy life but it will always bring strife in the way of happiness. Most of the relationships forged in the book do not succeed, which reflects on the fact that Lispector believes that relationships cannot exist as long as the immutable life truths are in existence (Lispector 103). Her worldview is mostly bleak and it does not show some sense of light to hold on to because not all the relationships and lives of her characters succeed but they come to a sad ending. Soulstorm is a book by Clarice Lispector, which contains 29 stories. The first thirteen stories are identified as bruising stories because in all of them, the souls of the characters exhibit the turmoil culminating from the awareness of the immutable life truths of solitude, passion, mortality, fear and passion that cause the constant turbulence in the lives of different human beings. Lennie & George in Of Mice & Men Essay Example for Free

Lennie George in Of Mice Men Essay In the story Of Mice Men, John Steinbeck creates a pair of low-class companionship as the storys main character. This pair of companionship, George and Lennie is very different from each other, nothing alike, no matter talking about their figures, personality, IQ, etc, except that they both carry the same American dream as they spend their hard days traveling together and working in the ranch. Lennie is portrayed as being childlike. He looks up on George as a parental figure: Lennies lips quivered and tears started in his eyes. Lennie seek reassurance from George like a child does from their parents. He displays the excitement of a child: Tell me about the rabbits, George. Tell me about the rabbits. Steinbeck suggests that Lennies dependent on George and that we all need companionship even if the relationship is unequal. Not only is Lennie portrayed as being childlike, but also very forgetful: I forgot, tried not to forget. Honest to god I did George. Lennie always gets in trouble, and always needs George to help him out.: Course you did. Well, look Lennie if you jus happen to get in trouble like u always done before, I want you to come right here and hide in the bush. Not only does he make himself in trouble but also gives trouble to George: An whatta I got, I got you! You cant keep a job and you lose me ever job I get. Steinbeck wants to give the readers a hint or preparation that a serious event is going to occur with Lennie, he also wants to convey that although Lennie is big, it doesnt mean that he has a big brain nor can he be independent and look after himself. Lennie is also being put in a character with characteristics like an animal: His huge companion dropped his blankets and flung himself down and drank from the green pool; drank with long gulps, snorting into the water like a horse. Lennie enjoys keeping mice, but as a result always kills it: They were so little, Id pet them, and pretty soon they bit my fingers and I pinch they heads a little and they was dead because they were so little. Steinbeck wants to show that a big man also has a sensitive side, and that being strong also has disadvantages, especially for Lennie who enjoys to pet mice and as a result kills it very quickly due to his big, strong hands. Lennies physique is described by Steinbeck as being big, strong looking, but is also described to have body parts in which imitating an animal: A huge man, shapeless of face, with large, pale eyes, with wide, sloping shoulders; and he walked heavily, dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paws. Although Lennie is very immature, but he is a very helpful and great worker : Say, you sure was right about him. Maybe he aint bright, but I never seen such a worker.He damn near killed his partner buckinbarley. There aint nobody can keep up with him. God, awmighty I never seen such a strong guy. Steinbck points out that even an immature, childish man like Lennie with low IQ, can also work better than a normal man, and that we should always give a chance to people like Lennie to work like a normal person with no prejudice against them. Lennie is a very simple minded man, and does whatever George tells him to do. He never thinks for himself and wont bother to rate if it was dangerous or not, he simply just does as he says, like master and servant: Tell you what made me stop that One day a bunch of guys were standin around Sacramento River.I was feelinpretty smart. I turned to Lennie and says Jump in and he jumps, couldnt swim a stroke. He damned near drowned before we could get him. Not only does Lennie always listen to Georges demands, but he also never rejects him and never dares to argue with him. He never got mad with it neither. Ive beat the hell outa him, and he could bust every bone in me just with his one han, but he never lifted a finger against me. Steinbeck expresses to readers that Lennie looks up at George at a higher status, like an idol and believes that whatever George tells him to do, is  for his own good, which is why he listens to George not minding if it is dangerous or not. Where as the other main character in the story Of Mice Men, known as George, is totally different from Lennie. George is suggested to protect Lennie too much, and that he doesnt let Lennie talk when he is suppose to. When he sells Lennie too much, people might mistaken that George is hiding something about Lennie.: Then why dont you let him answer? What you trying to put over?. George also uses a special technique to make Lennie listen to him, from this technique he gives pressure to Lennie so that he will always keep Georges words in mind.: But you aint gonna get in no trouble, because if you do, I wont let you tend the rabbits. Steinbeck points out that George is protecting Lennie too much, and that he should always let him try and let him communicate more, socialize more and approach the outside world more, or else he would depend on George too much and takes it as an advantage. George is also suggested to be smart, and has a lot of common sense. He uses his sensitive sensitivity to teach and lead Lennie to the right track: Tastes all right, dont really seem to be running though. You never oughta drink water when it aint running, Lennie. Not only is George sensitive but he is also very smart in the ability to judge correctly: You never had none, you crazy bastard. I got both of em here. Think I let you carry your own work card? Steinbeck shows the readers that it is an advantage for Lennie to be looked after by George, for George has the power to untie him from troubles he makes, and knows whats best for him. Steinbeck also tells the readers, that the people with the same problems as Lennie should always be helped and be guided to the right way, instead of being discriminated. George also gets very fed up with Lennie sometimes, having to escape with Lennie from the troubles Lennie has caused from time to time.: God amighty, if I was to live alone I could live so easy. I could get a job and  work, and no trouble. No mess at all, and when the end of the month come I could take my fifty bucks and go into town and get whatever I want. But on the other hand, he also cares a lot about Lennies feelings, and always persuades him to think towards the positive side when Lennie is depressed.: Aw, Lennie! I aint taking it away jus for meanness. That mouse aint fresh, Lennie; and besides, youve broke it pettin it. You get another mouse thats fresh and Ill let you keep it a while. Steinbeck suggests that in order to be companionships, we will have to care for one and anothers feelings, Steinbeck also coveys that there arent any perfect pair of companionship, for there has to be arguments between people, since humans are born with these characteristics. George having to be a trustworthy companionship with Lennie, always believes in his partner no matter what happens. He will always trust Lennie for whatever he does, and the decisions he makes.: Lennie never done it in meanness. All the time he done bad things, but never done one of them mean. George makes the relationship between Lennie and him like a family, George tells Lennie about their dreams, and how they are different to other people, as if its going to come true. George gives hope to Lennie making him feel better and have a target so that he wont feel that he is working for nothing and that they are working to make their dream come true.: But not us! An why? Because because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and thats why. Steinbeck tells the readers that although these low-class workers are poor and lonely, they havent got a stable home. But George and Lennie are different. For they carry a hope, a dream. This is why George and Lennie are never lonely. Steinbeck also suggests that an American dream in those days, does not come true easily. Overall I think that John Steinbeck wants us to know that we should use Lennie and George as an example to how we should treat people with the same problems as Lennie is facing. Instead of discriminating them, we should always give them a hand of trust to help them. John Steinbeck also suggests  that although Lennie may have mental problems, but from this information, it doesnt mean that Lennie is useless. He may be stupid, but he is very hard working and may be better than most normal workers working in the ranch. John Steinbeck also wants us to know that although people like Lennie often creates serious problems due to his stupidity, this doesnt suggest that he can use his low IQ, and stupidity as an excuse to not face the problem and just find another job, not caring what he had done before.
